TwimGo 3.0.9 with Read it Later support for N9/N950/N900

Qt guru Tommi Laukkanen updates his twitter application TwimGo to 3.0.9 as a holiday gift for N9/N950/N900 users.

Few months have passed since the last releases. We are starting to build a house so that project will take some of my spare time every now and then.
During the last few days I have coded TwimGo v3.0.9 which includes something new: Read it Later support, which makes it easy to store interesting links so that you can read them later for example with another device. It works like this:
  1. Open tweet which includes interesting link
  2. Click “Read it Later…”
  3. Read it Later opens in browser and you can add tags if you want
  4. Press “Save”

There are also few other fixes and improvements in TwimGo 3.0.9:
  • Read it Later support – You can now easily add interesting links to your Read it Later list so you can read them on better time with your computer or tablet
  • Translations – There are now few translation like Turkey, Finnish, Italian and Swedish
  • Slightly larger profile picture in profile view – Requested in issue #46
  • Loading indicator is now using platform style busy indicator from Qt Quick Components
  • Location sharing fixed on N9 and N950

New firmware 22.2011.44.2 for Nokia N9 appeared on Navifirm

The screenshot above showing firmware version 22.2011.44.2 for Nokia N9. I heard the news about N9 PR1.2 appeared in navifirm so I run my navifirm and I was surprised to see the new firmware. But so far I have acknowledged this is not PR1.2 but PR 1.1.1, which is simply a fix for PR 1.1, aimed at the Middle Eastern market. This supposedly fixes a bug caused by Arabic language support. So this is PR 1.1.1 V 22.2011.44-2 which adds Arabic support for the UI. No official changelog yet.

Enable Landscape Support for Home Screens in Nokia N9

The N950 and the N9, or at least the current software builds, come with landscape mode support enabled in selected applications only. This does not include the "home screens". It is especially inconvenient on the N950 with its hardware keyboard while it is open...

Hopefully Nokia will enable landscape support accross the whole UI in upcoming firmware upgrades.

To get landscape support you have to manually modify the corresponding CSS file. You can do it as follows:
  • launch X-Terminal. If you can't find its icon, you'll need to enable it first by switching on the Developer Mode in Settings / Security
  • type devel-su and then rootme as password to become root
  • type nano /usr/share/themes/base/meegotouch/
    meegotouchhome/meegotouch.css
  • scroll down until you reach locked-orientation: "portrait"; delete the word portrait & change it to locked-orientation: "";
  • tap the on-screen Ctrl button and then press X on the keyboard
  • confirm that you want to save the file by pressing Y (disable the still pressed on-screen Ctrl button first) and then press Enter
  • reboot the phone.

Enjoy your home screens automatically rotating their orientation!

Nokia to release two Lumia 800 updates to fix battery issue

Lumia 800 is a sophisticated and capable Windows Phone 7 powered smartphone released recently by Nokia. Apparently, some users have started to complain about battery issues with the mobile phone soon after the device hit shelves, and Nokia already kicked off an investigation on the matter.

Nokia has issued the following statement in response to some customers’ questions about the power consumption of their Nokia Lumia devices:

“ We understand that some people have expressed concerns about battery life on the Nokia Lumia 800.  Early investigations show that the majority of people are enjoying the full Nokia Lumia experience without any problems.  A software update in early December will include improvements to power efficiency, while a second update in early January introduces further enhancements to battery life and battery charging.  Both are planned updates and will be made available via Zune.  We recommend that anyone who still has concerns contact local Nokia care representatives at their earliest convenience.”

Community SSU 21.2011.38-1Smaemo1 - Stable Version Released

The stable cssu is meant for all those people who didn't want to install the cssu because it happened to break stuff from time to time.
We're trying to achieve an as close to stock maemo experience as possible in terms of stability.

If you've got cssu-testing installed a reflash is needed prior to installing CSSU-stable. It is recommended to have PR 1.3 (20.2010.36) or PR 1.3.1 (21.2011.38) to install CSSU stable.

The stable cssu contains those packages from testing version 16.8 which were deemed stable. Basically nearly everything but modest/tinymail and the camera-ui replacement.

The exact packages + minor changes to those packages can be found on the changelog page for the stable cssu http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU/ChangelogStable

Since there are most packages from 16.8 it supports most features 16.8 has, nevertheless there is a dedicated page with all supported features listed: http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU/FeaturesStable

Note: 21.2011.38-1 is the latest official Nokia version. The "S" of "Smaemo1" stands for stable and next of it indicates the Community SSU release version. This string is not edited so the Ovi store doesn't break.

New CSSU update for Maemo 5 version 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1 is out

New Maemo 5 system update version 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1 is out and you should see it in the Application Manager (if not, try refreshing it).

Changelog:

* Added Qt DigiNotar blacklists.
* Fixed modest crashes.
* Fixed camera-ui corrupting videos after switching to background while recording.
* Fixed camera-ui overwriting user data.
* Fixed portrait wallpapers in hildon-home.
* CSSU rebased on top of official PR1.3.1 release.

Please note that this is a testing release - that's what the T symbol in the version string stands for. Stable release should follow soon. Keep in mind that changing between stable and testing releases requires a reflash, so if you prefer to eventually have the stable release on your device without having to reflash it, skip this one and wait for the version marked with S in the release string.

Here comes the Maemo 5 PR 1.3.1 update for N900

A few days ago MohammadAG leaked a news about Maemo PR 1.3.1 security update in Maemo.org wesite. I posted that news in this blog. Everyone was expecting a lots of bug fix and improvements. I was waiting eagerly for the update.
Today I refreshed my N900's application catalog and I was so happy to see the software update notification. But I got sad when I found that it is just a minor security update fixing the DigiNotar issue and a fixed security control panel applet. Though I updated my N900 to PR 1.3.1 successfully. The about product shows the version 21.2011.38-1. Non CSSU users can update right away through application manager. I tried with Nokia OVI suite but the update didn't show. CSSU users have to wait for next CSSU update. CSSU maintainer will include this fix in their next update.
Happy updating.
Here's some screenshot for you all.

 Updated components are:
  • maemosec-certman-applet
  • libmaemosec-certmant-applet0
  • mp-fremantle-generic-pr
  • libmaemosec-certman0
  • maemosec-certman-common-ca
  • libmaemosec0
  • maemosec-certman-tools

White N9 and Software Update for N9 coming end of this year

Nokia conversation confirmed that a 64GB version of White Nokia N9 coming end of this year and they also confirmed a software update will be available with lots of improvements.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/10/26/nokia-n9-gets-a-new-colour-and-a-software-update/
"Nokia is happy to announce a new addition to the Nokia N9 family with the arrival of the white version of the highly acclaimed device. Current Nokia N9 users will also be pleased to hear that they will soon be getting a software update for their phone.
Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, explains: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers.” The white Nokia N9 sports a glossy finish, so it looks slightly different from its matte sisters in black, magenta and cyan. It will be available during the fourth quarter of 2011, starting with the 64GB version.

The other Nokia N9 news today is the software update, which people will be able to download during the fourth quarter of 2011. The update includes usability improvements, like music controls keys from the lock screen or closing apps by swiping them down by default and NFC tag reading is also added."

[Sneak Peak] Whats coming to N9 Firmware Update

Konttori (the Coach for Harmattan Applications Framework) hinted in a recent post about upcoming update for our beloved N9 and we can read "around 3500 improvements (fixes or features) to be in the release" (PR1.1 and PR1.2 combined i guess) , i didn't want to post about that until having some "facts" about what can we expect really to be addressed, and here we are with some of them, but first of all, you should know there'll be like 3 future firmware updates for the N9 in the future PR1.1, PR1.2 and PR1.3, maybe more, but that's for know and it's enough to use the device for daily use for 2 years ;)

Anyway, 308 task or features were completed for 1.1, you should know that PR1.1 is all about being faster, stronger, better. It succeeded on all metrics, reliability, use time, performance, long period use. All metrics for 1.1 are simply outstanding based on Konttori comments and hints !

- Low power mode enhancemens, battery charging and silent profile are now shown in there.
- Tons of NFC and connectivity improvements.
- Performance enhancements.
- Visual tuneups (e.g. toolbar has a shadow now).
- Splash screen has been taken to wider use.
- Color management is less nervous than before (neutral sRGB space color palette is now used always, except in clearly outdoor situations, when oversaturation is applied to adjust how eye desaturates content in brightness).

- Lock screen music controls has been added (It's in the top of the screen and at least I'm pleased with how nicely a nuance the controls look. Currently playing song is on big friendly letters, replacing clock when you are playing music).

- Swype keyboard has been added.
- Keyboard switching is very smooth with swipe gesture.
- Battery notification was tuned for 1.1 and should come every 2 minutes while in call, every 5 minutes when display on and every 30 minutes when display off.
- Turning device to landscape is supported allover UI it seems.
- Double tap was re-tuned a bit for 1.1. It's a bit more reliable again.
- Tons of exchange fixes
- Facebook starts faster and has tons of fixes in both 1.1 and 1.2. I'd say it's bearable in 1.1.
- wifi in general has been improved by leaps and bounds in 1.1.
- Magnifier works in 1.1 much better than in 1.0.
- Swipe-to-close is enabled by default in 1.1

For the PR1.2 it is officially feature enhancement release, so, it contains a lot of new things. :

- Universal copy paste is coming in.
- Swipe-to-close and more logical and visual in 1.2.
- Implementation of decoder enhancements for h264
- Folders will come in 1.2 to home screen. And it's not only apps that need it. If you start using bookmarks a bit more, it's really irritating to not to have bookmarks. Guys in Oulu say that the work should be complete for the feature, so it's about 3 weeks to have decent polish on it. It's one of the "big" features of 1.2

Not sure yet if this could make is way on a future update :

- More games will definitely come, but none is HD, as the screen is WVGA
- Somebody should do numeric T9.
- Not sure if the birthday support is coming or not. I think it is, but not sure
- No comments on video call (included skype)
- Bigger avatar on calls perhaps coming in 1.2
- Push notifications (on mentions and retweets in the Twitter app) were supposed to come
- Contacts as shortcuts is possible, simple to be done, but not in the books at the moment. Please write to nokia care about that. And create a bug.
- Java support is not going to come officially.
- Flash support may come.
- Voice control was in the cards, but we eventually dropped it. Not coming, sorry.
- upcoming calendar notifications has been discussed a lot. I can't remember why it's not there, but there was some reason for it...
- Browser toolbar in landscape should indeed be at the bottom. We are planning to get it to autohide in 1.2, but no promises (it's not on the top of the to-do list)
